By far the most beautiful ship I've sailed on, green and orange carpet aside. The layout of this ship is fantastic and we got our bearings on the first day! When we sailed the NCL Joy in late October 2022, I think I only got my bearings on Day #5. There were plenty of elevators, not just AFT and FWD, like many NCL ships. As soon as we were onboard, we checked to ensure our Visa was registered (it was) and we activated our cruise cards.
Where does MSC Meraviglia sail from?
The area was home to a pool, a hot tub, tons of seating, solarium access and a daily outdoor buffet at the Yacht Club Grill. Although the food looked tasty, it was, unfortunately, often surrounded by flies. We found the best bar on the ship to be the Sky Lounge on deck 18 overlooking the pool deck while the other lounges are primarily just set up in open spaces and aren’t very cozy or lounge-like. While those spaces are good for people watching, they’re not great for relaxing as they have more of an airport lounge feel than a luxury cruise ship lounge feel. So most afternoons and evenings, we’d end up in the Sky Lounge which had a variety of music performers throughout the week, all were generally good.

I also thought that, perhaps, the large group booking was a one-off and that it wouldn't be the norm on other sailings. However, I spoke with one of the officers on board who told me that the cruise line is actively recruiting similar large group bookings. There's little I enjoy more than a relaxing arcade day, and MSC delivers with its Sportplex gaming complex.
MSC Meraviglia Drink Packages
It was the same buffet food on the inside of the buffet, but it was just right outside on Lido, so you didn’t have to go in. But there was no you know, I think about even Celebrity Apex had the burger and fries station and Carnival and all of their side restaurants that they have that are included. It is focused on the buffet and their and their main dining room for the included options. This is MSC’s version of the ship-within-a-ship concept, wherein passengers willing to pay the price have exclusive access to their dining room, lounge, sun deck, pool, hot tubs, and a butler.
I'm a global nomad at heart, and the dedicated editor behind CruiseGear. For the past two decades, I've experienced exciting voyages across the world, discovering countless ports from the decks of dozens of ships, visiting 40+ countries (and living in some of them for years). It's been an exhilarating journey to say the least! I want to share everything I've learned and hope to make your next cruise vacation as enjoyable as possible. If the ship had an itinerary that was a “must try” or included a few places I really want to go, I’d consider the Meraviglia again. However, it almost felt too stressful to enjoy most days so for that reason, I’d likely pass on booking this ship again.

We found the selections on the buffet to be sufficient and standard. There is a meat carving station, salad bar, ethnic dishes, breads, desserts, and a full-service bar. There are 20 treatment rooms (most ships only have a handful) and one of the nicest thermal suites at sea. If you have a sweet tooth, head down to deck six, where French chocolatier and pastry chef Jean-Philippe Maury has a permanent presence on MSC Meraviglia.

On the classics menu, you had lobster and filet mignon. And then uh, for the regular offerings every day they had a rotation of several different items. Usually there was a daily result of that was available. He would arrange our bookings if we wanted to go to any specialty restaurant. And so it was, you know, Rocky and I asked as we were getting ready, we’re like, is this just going to be an upgraded room steward, like a room steward that wears a suit? Um, and no, it was it was significantly more than just a room steward.

Cruise Radio prioritizes well-balanced cruise news coverage and accurate reporting, paired with ship reviews and tips. On the most basic of levels, a cruise is a cruise. But I’ve long believed that not every cruise (or cruise ship) is right for every person. There are differences between MSC and other mainstream lines, such as Norwegian or Carnival Cruise Lines, and it’s important to do some research and ensure you understand those differences.
Hotels
The food in the MDR was good (not the best I've had at sea, but far better than most all inclusives I've been to). I only had one meal that was terrible (chicken and waffles). The filet mignon and lobster on gala night was great, as is some of their pasta and salads.
I did link our rooms so they know we are together. Looking forward to a different cruise line to compare. At first glance, the selection of places to eat on the ship looks great, until you realize they are almost all available at an extra cost.
From the coffee "store" to the many lounges with live entertainment, it's not hard to find pockets of space for yourself. In place of the typical cruise atrium, the "Lobby Bar" looks more like an actual hotel bar. Before this, all of my staterooms had been under 300 square-feet. While I like the fun and flashy amenities on ships like the Norwegian Prima and Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas (shown below), I didn’t miss them on the Explora 1. In September, I had an overnight on the new Oceania Cruises' Vista ship, which quickly topped my list of best cruise staterooms I've ever stayed in.
The only complimentary food on board is the Buffet and the main dining rooms, with poolside food available at lunch (burgers, hotdogs, etc). If you want to participate in anything other than the main dining room at dinner, expect to pay extra, and it’s not inexpensive. We didn’t feel that space was designed to host those parties. And so you’ve got people trying to make their way throughout the ship and people dancing and singing. And that was really the only time we felt like we were crowded, or that we were kind of annoyed a little bit by the traffic flow of the ship. Otherwise I would I would tell you, we didn’t feel crowds, even the buffet, the buffets, were sometimes a little bit busy, but but not to the point where we’ve seen it wear on other lines.
The prices have just increased for each beverage package, and they are substantially more expensive when purchasing onboard vs. pre-cruise. There are two main dining rooms that serve the same food, just with different decor. This allows the ship to more effectively schedule times and service with so many passengers, and the concept works well.
The MSC Yacht Club is a private section on select MSC ships that offers cabins across several categories, including suites. In addition to these packages, passengers seeking a more exclusive experience can book a cabin in the MSC Meraviglia Yacht Club, which is a separate section within the ship with extra perks. We have always found the food in the MDR on other ships more than good, so we would rather spend our money on other things. This was a trip without kids, so we never made it to the MDR for breakfast, or lunch for that matter. To be honest, I found the times for these meals at the MDR quite limited compared to other cruise lines.
